Mick Oxley has been painting now for seven years. Based in the Northumbrian sea-side village of Craster, a location which serves as inspiration for much of his work.

Mick's current body of work covers two main themes: Watercolour seascapes depicting the dark brooding seas of a Northumbrian winter, which over the years have become looser, more intuitive and emotive representations of the elements portrayed.

Secondly there are the canvases portraying the rock pools of summer. Brilliant jewels of light and texture alive with shimmering shades and colours.

For these, Mick applies a strong textural base of gesso before painting with multiple layers of acrylic paint and ink to capture the ephemeral drama of light on water and rock.

The resulting canvasses range from small square macro views of a spectacular natural world, to large sweeping vistas over single, twin or triptych canvases encouraging an often unconscious immersive response on the part of the viewer.
